Rob and his crew are so dedicated to getting each hunter a bear and it shows! They put so much time in over the course of the year getting stands ready and baited. Bear camp was one of the best times of my life! The comradery between hunters is something to experience. I sat for four long days waiting for my chance at a bear. On day five, my last day at camp, Rob put me way up in a tree in a different stand and told me he had a good feeling. Sure enough, about an hour before closing time, two bears were out in front of me. Rob, his son, and my dad came out to my stand to help me with my bear and celebrate. Those are memories I made with my dad that I will cherish forever. I was a little nervous being one of the few women at camp but I was treated with kindness and just as much respect as the other hunters. I'd recommend Rob and his crew to anyone! Sydnie Baetz

My wife Denise and I first visited Northern WI Outfitters at Bear Camp in 2019. We have a friend who has participated in Rob’s bear camp for years. Our goal was to spend the bulk of the day, meet Rob, family, and crew, and determine if this was the right fit for my first Bear Hunt. Within the first hour, I could see Rob’s passion for bear hunting and the patience he had with the “new” hunters. I knew we would be back next year with bear tag in hand.
Prior to the 2020 hunt, I drove up to spend an afternoon with Rob. When I arrived, I was greeted by their delightful children. I quizzed them about bear hunting, and they provided valuable information. Upon Rob’s return home from baiting, I watched as he prepared the bait for the next couple of stands. Over the next several hours, Rob and I shared dozens of hunting stories as he proceeded to do his daily chores.
Having been a successful Deer Hunter for nearly 40years, what I liked most about our conversation was how Rob contrasted Deer and Bear hunting. He stressed repeatedly the importance of scent and movement control if you want the BIG one. By reviewing trail cam photos, he taught me how to judge size. I asked about the biggest mistakes hunters make, and he shared many stories of the “good and not so good”.
Opening day finally arrived. Rob took another hunter and I to a remote area nearly 30 miles from camp. He walked me back to the stand, made sure I was set, made sure I was comfortable in getting back to the truck in the dark, baited the pile, and wished me luck. At 2:00pm it started to pour, I hunkered down in the rain for the next 3 hours. At 5:30 pm I saw my very first bear in the woods. The bear walked up to bait and proceed to eat. Using the training I received from Rob, I quickly identified it was not big enough and proceeded to watch it thru the binoculars.
Day two, my wife Denise spent the day at camp as I proceeded to the woods. She thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of everyone in camp as she patiently prayed and waited for the phone call. Again about 5:30 pm I noticed a bear sneaking into the bait pile. Seconds later another from the opposite direction. I instantly could tell the second bear was the dominate bear as he threw the stump off of the bait and proceeded to eat. I studied him thru the scope and decided this was going to be my first bear as I squeezed the trigger. I made the call to Heidi in camp, she reminded me of the rules, and Rob, Jerry, Michael, and Denise drove up to help me retrieve the bear. This turned out to be quite the challenge as the bear ran down a steep gorge to the bottom of the creek bed. After much work by the team, we got the bear back to camp and the celebration for me began! Since then, I have convinced family and friends to start buying tags so they can have the same, wonderful experience we had. Personally, I can’t wait to do it all over again!!!! Rick Ottman
